Your gutters work hard to protect your home from the damages water can cause. They divert rainwater away from your home and help prevent basement flooding, structural damage, and other moisture-related problems. If you are great at maintaining your gutters, then they will last you a long time. However, they don’t last forever. Here are some signs to look out for that will tell you it is time to replace your gutters.
- Cracks in Your Gutters. Your gutters can crack or split over time, resulting in water seeping into the boards behind your gutters, into your shingles, and falling onto your foundation. If you find cracks in almost all of your gutter system, then it is probably time to replace the entire system. However, if there are cracks in just one or two pieces of your system, then you might be able to replace just those sections.
- Gutters Pulling Away. If you notice your gutters pulling away from your roof, no matter how many times you hammer them in, it is probably time to replace the fascia boards. Replacing your gutter system will allow you to fix the fascia board problem and give you new gutters as well.
- Rust and Paint Peeling. If you have excess moisture on your gutters, the paint on your gutters will bubble up and peel away and your gutters can rust. The peeling paint and rust means that there is a leak in your gutters that is stripping away your paint and causing the rust. If there are multiple areas where peeling paint and rust are present on your gutters, it might be time to consider getting them replaced.
